Super cool island. Very ritzy beach houses and the Battery is creepy and cool. Definitely recommend a visit. Island has good food and the locals tolerate the tourism well. There are places to rent golf carts for a few hours as well. Ferry ride from Portland is only 15min.
If you love the abandoned and you consider a ferry ride, bike ride, and stroll a good way to get somewhere then this place is for you! It’s amazing — an old WWII fort at your disposal on the Atlantic coast, yes please.
Highly recommend hiking/walking to Battery Steele, it’s truly a unique spot with a cool history. Great location for photography and videography.

Very cool place to check out with quite the history. We road our bikes there and explored by foot. Loved all the bright graffiti and exploring inside by the light of our phones and bike light!
We dared ventured in and had a flashlight to see the different areas covered in graffiti. Definitely worth a visit, it was a nice place to cool down in a hot day.
We hadn’t heard about Battery Steele until we arrived on Peaks Island. It’s a very cool and historic part of not just the island and state but also the country and world. Personally I feel it’s a shame that so many people have covered the he entire thing in graffiti. A local went as far to say there was a art festival. Like others have said if you plan on really exploring prong a bright flashlight. It is quite large and little to no light.
We went a few days after it had rained and the paths leading up to the battery were very soggy. If you have a car or bike there is an alternative way to get there, Florida Ave.
It’s very exciting to be able to explore a structure like this legally. Good place for photos and lots of interesting graffiti. Bring a good flashlight and some rubber boots, there are parts of this that are pitch black and flooded.
